If you happen to be in Paphos around Easter, you are in the right place at the right time. Orthodox Easter — which Cyprus celebrates according to the Eastern calendar — is the most important event in the Cypriot year. It is bigger than Christmas, more deeply felt than any summer festival, and completely unlike anything you will have experienced at home.

It is also almost entirely inaccessible without a hire car. Here is what is happening in April 2026 and how to see it properly.

When Is Orthodox Easter 2026?

Orthodox Easter 2026 falls on Sunday 19 April. The critical dates:

Note: Most car hire companies are closed or operating reduced hours on Easter Sunday and Monday. This is crucial for logistics — see below.

What Actually Happens at Easter in Paphos

The Good Friday Epitaphios Procession

On Good Friday evening, every church in Cyprus carries the Epitaphios — a flower-decorated bier representing the body of Christ — through the streets of their village or neighbourhood in a candlelit procession. In Paphos town, the procession from Agia Kyriaki (the church next to the harbour) is the largest and most accessible for visitors.

But the village processions are where Easter is most authentically experienced. The processions through Peyia, Pegeia, Tala, Kathikas, and the mountain villages are intimate, unhurried, and genuinely moving even for non-religious visitors. You will not find these without a car.

The Holy Saturday Midnight Service

This is the event. At midnight precisely on Holy Saturday, the lights inside every church in Cyprus are extinguished. In the darkness, the priest emerges with a single lit candle representing the light of the Resurrection. The flame is passed from candle to candle through the packed congregation and out into the streets.

The moment when hundreds of people emerge from a darkened church holding lit candles into a warm April night, bells ringing, the words “Christos Anesti” (Christ is Risen) echoing from every direction — it is one of the most memorable experiences Cyprus offers.

In Paphos town, the main service takes place at the Cathedral. But again: the village services are something else entirely. Driving to Pano Paphos (the old town on the hill above Kato Paphos) for the midnight service, then continuing to one of the mountain villages, requires a car.

Practical note: Services end at approximately 00:30–01:00. You will then be driving back through the Pafos district in the early hours of Easter Sunday. Roads are generally quiet but exercise extra care — other drivers may have been celebrating.

Easter Sunday — Lamb, Villages, and Open Everything

Easter Sunday morning in Paphos is one of the most sociable days of the year. Every village has families gathered around the spit, roasting lamb (souvla) from early morning. The smell carries across the entire island.

The larger supermarkets (Lidl, Alphamega, Kings Avenue area) are closed on Easter Sunday. Local bakeries and some small shops open briefly. Most restaurants open for the traditional Easter meal in the afternoon. Planning requires a car — do your shopping on Holy Thursday or Good Friday before the closures.

The Cap St Georges Easter Village 2026

One of the most visitor-friendly Easter events in the Paphos area is the Easter Village at Agios Georgios, Peyia — organised by the Cap St Georges resort. The event runs 1–14 April 2026 and includes traditional Cypriot food, Easter crafts, live music, and cultural demonstrations.

Agios Georgios is a small harbour village on the north coast of the Pafos peninsula, approximately 20km north of Paphos town. It is completely inaccessible by public transport. You need a car — but the coastal road from Coral Bay to Agios Georgios is one of the most scenic drives in the region and well worth the trip even without the Easter Village.

The Polemi Tulip Festival

The village of Polemi, in the wine-growing hills above Paphos, hosts its annual Tulip Festival in early April — coinciding with Easter week in 2026. The festival celebrates the wild tulips that grow in the surrounding fields — a genuinely unusual sight in the Mediterranean — alongside local wine, food, and village life.

Polemi is approximately 25km northeast of Paphos town. No bus service. 30 minutes by car through increasingly beautiful countryside that includes Tsada, Stroumpi, and the vine-covered hillsides of the Pafos wine region.

The Cyprus Marathon — Easter Weekend

The Cyprus Marathon takes place in the Paphos area, with its iconic route starting from Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s Rock) and finishing at Paphos Harbour Medieval Castle. In 2026 it falls in the Easter period. There are four distances: the full marathon, half-marathon, 10km, and a 5km Sunset Run.

For visitors who are not running, watching the finish at Paphos harbour is worth doing — the castle backdrop at the end of the race is spectacular. For participants, having your own car for getting to the start line at Aphrodite’s Rock (20km southeast of Paphos town) and back from the finish is essentially essential.

Car Hire for Easter — Critical Logistics

This is the section that catches first-timers out.

Several top car hire companies are closed on Easter Sunday. Leo Opsimos and PafoRentals do not operate on Easter Sunday without prior arrangement. If your flight arrives on Easter Sunday and you have not pre-arranged your hire, you will have a problem.

For Easter Sunday arrivals, your options are:

Book earlier than usual for Easter week. Easter 2026 falls in mid-to-late April — the start of the shoulder season and a popular holiday week for UK visitors. Local car hire companies fill up faster than usual around Easter. If your travel dates include Easter week, book now.

Do your shopping before Good Friday. The supermarkets near the airport road are open on Good Friday but will be closed or have limited hours on Easter Sunday and Monday. Stock up on water, snacks, and anything you need before the long weekend.

Beyond Easter — What Else Is On in April 2026

April is one of the best months to visit Paphos even without Easter. Temperatures are warm but not yet hot (22–26°C). The countryside is at its greenest. The wildflowers on the Akamas Peninsula are at their peak. The beaches are quiet.
